Internship Experience at Bank of New York Mellon

Where should I start talking about this experience? Okay, let me get the details about the work culture out of the way first. The company was chill and gave me ample time to finish the tasks. I am talking about two to three weeks for something you could finish within a day. The hierarchy in the company is not very rigid, so you could go up and have a conversation with a senior person, and almost always, they will be more than happy to talk with you. There were a lot of senior leader connections, and we, as interns, got the chance to network with senior management from across the world. As far as opportunities go, the company is vast, and there are quite a lot of different work opportunities, so you will never get bored due to being stuck with a single stack or something.

The people of the company were very friendly and welcoming. For the foodies who might be reading this, the food was delicious. Almost everyone says that coffee is great here (although I am not a coffee person). I rate the experience a five on five. I am not sure about all the teams, but the team I worked in was very supportive; you could go to them with any dumb doubt, and they would make sure you understood everything without making you feel dumb.

The interview/selection process for the company was pretty straightforward. The online assessment questions were comparable to LeetCode medium-hard, but most probably the shortlisting happened based on both the OA scores and the resume. There were two rounds of interviews. The first one was purely technical, where I was asked questions from a variety of CS topics, from OOP to functional programming, to ending up with coding up LRU policy, it was kind of a bit of everything. The second interview was kind of technical, where the interviewer asked some high-level system design questions and a few more advanced questions that you would be able to handle if you are in tune with the current industry practices. Overall, I had a very good experience; both interviewers were very friendly.

I am more of a live-in-the-moment guy, so I don’t have many photos. Sorry if that’s a letdown, but all in all, anyone would enjoy working at this company.
