Internship Experience at Texas Instruments

My internship journey with Texas Instruments (TI) was filled with ups and downs and a lot of learning.

The journey before the journey

Initially, I had applied when Texas Instruments came for on-campus drives. To prepare for the assessment and interviews, I looked for resources online, and honestly, the channels of Chembian T and Himanshu Agrawal helped me tremendously during the preparation phase. With that effort, I cleared the assessment round and felt quite confident about the interview.

However, when it came to the actual interview, things didn’t go as planned. I missed some crucial points despite the interviewer dropping a few hints. It being my very first interview, I couldn’t really pick them up in time and messed it up, which cost me the opportunity.

But life has a way of giving second chances. Soon after, one of our Electrical Department faculty members organised a TI Hackathon. The problem statements were shared on the day itself, and it was quite challenging and fun. My team secured 2nd place in the competition, and the catch here was that the top three teams were to get interview calls from TI HR for a summer internship opportunity.

When the call came, I made sure to revise all important topics thoroughly. On the day of the interview, I again felt like I hadn’t done my best. But to my surprise, later that evening, around 5 PM, I received the much-awaited mail that started with “Congratulations! …” and that’s how my journey with TI officially began.

What it was like

TI takes care of its interns really well. Once you get the internship, they provide a 7-day stay at a 5-star hotel along with daily shuttle service between the hotel and office, which makes the settling-in process very smooth. After the initial orientation sessions, lab visits, and department introductions, we were finally assigned our mentors. Interestingly, I happened to be the very first intern my mentor had ever guided.

What I learnt

My project involved simulations and experiments, which required me to brush up on coursework, dive into research papers, and then translate concepts into practical simulations. One important learning during this journey was the value of communication with your mentor. While they may never give you direct answers, they will definitely guide you with the right hints. Picking up on those hints helped me push my project to the simulation stage successfully. Although I could not complete the hardware implementation before my internship period ended, the learning process itself was incredibly enriching.

To sum it all up

My time at TI was not just about technical exposure but also about learning how to approach problems systematically and communicate effectively. Add to that the comfort of the facilities and the vibrant work culture, and it truly became a memorable, growth-filled experience.
