My internship with Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) was a transformative period of learning and growth. Here’s a look back at my journey, from the application process to the invaluable lessons from working at one of India’s largest engineering companies.

Application Process

Securing a spot at BHEL for vocational training involves a combination of timely applications and leveraging connections. Due to the high volume of applicants, applying early and maintaining follow-ups with the HR team is essential. Personal referrals can also prove advantageous in standing out.

Interview Preparation

BHEL's internship program operates differently from other organizations; instead of personal interviews, the selection is based on a review of academic records and a strong resume. This streamlined process means a well-prepared resume and good grades are crucial for being shortlisted.

Internship Objectives

My primary objective was to gain hands-on experience with the electrical engineering processes integral to power generation and transmission. Working alongside BHEL’s seasoned engineers was particularly insightful, offering exposure to large-scale industrial setups and the intricate engineering involved in power production.

Challenges Faced

Adjusting to BHEL’s massive operational scale was initially challenging. The early phase required patience as I familiarized myself with complex processes and the plant's sheer magnitude. Technical challenges, particularly in data collection and machine troubleshooting, tested my analytical skills and persistence, but overcoming them proved to be a rewarding experience.

Accommodation and Location Experience

I completed my internship at BHEL’s Bhopal plant, conveniently located in my hometown, allowing me to stay home. For interns from other cities, BHEL provides nearby company accommodation that is both comfortable and secure. Living close to the facility enabled interns to make the most of their work hours, foster connections with peers, and experience a collaborative environment.

Financial Insight

Like many government engineering internships, this program was unpaid. While there was no post-internship placement offer (PPO), the experience’s brand value and learning potential far outweighed any financial considerations. Moreover, BHEL has been a previous recruiter on campus, so this internship could serve as a stepping stone for future opportunities. Additionally, through the GATE examination, there are always avenues to join the firm later.

Memorable Moments

One of my most memorable experiences was troubleshooting a minor issue with a power transformer. The problem required patience and technical knowledge, and I was fortunate to have seasoned engineers guide me through the process. This incident highlighted the importance of teamwork and hands-on troubleshooting in industrial engineering.

Fun Moments at the Plant

One of the most fun—and slightly nerve-wracking—memories involved watching BHEL’s enormous overhead cranes move tons of equipment across the plant. Despite wearing helmets, our intern team couldn’t help but feel a mix of awe and apprehension every time a crane passed overhead. It became an inside joke, with everyone exchanging amused and cautious glances whenever those colossal machines moved above us, adding some light-hearted moments amidst the intensity of industrial life.

Advice for Future Interns

For students interested in a BHEL internship, I recommend building a solid foundation in core subjects and practical knowledge related to power and machinery. Keeping an open mind and being eager to learn from both experienced engineers and fellow interns will make the journey more enriching. Adapting to the scale and complexity of large industrial environments will prepare you well for the challenges and rewards that lie ahead. I would have loved to share photos of the plant and our intern team, but due to strict security policies, BHEL doesn’t permit the sharing of internal visuals. I hope these insights provide future interns with a clear idea of what to expect at BHEL and inspire them to embark on their journey into industrial engineering.
